Frequently Asked Questions
What is Financial Independence (FI)? +
FI is the point where your investment corpus generates enough passive income to cover your living expenses indefinitely, without needing to work. The most common rule is the 4% withdrawal rate (your corpus should be 25× your annual expenses).
What is the 4% rule? +
Research suggests that withdrawing 4% of your portfolio annually has historically sustained a 30-year retirement. This means your FI target = annual expenses × 25. It's a guideline, not a guarantee.
Why does inflation matter so much? +
This calculator uses real returns (investment return minus inflation) to account for purchasing power. A 12% return with 6% inflation gives a real return of ~6%, which is what actually matters for long-term planning.
What if I reach FI earlier than expected? +
That's the goal. The scenarios show how small changes, like investing more per month or reducing expenses, can move your FI date by years. Small consistent changes have outsized long-term impact.
